Lot 3922

1872-CC $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. Lightly toned on loth sides. The presently offered coin is a handsome About Uncirculated 55, as noted, in warm brownish gold, with excellent luster and a mostly sharp strike. This is an impressive, beautiful coin to say the least, and its new owner can feel rightly proud to display it.

The mintage of the 1872-CC $10 was just 4,600 pieces, since most depositors preferred the more functional $20 denomination for export purposes. Of that figure, various estimates have been given for the number of survivors, but it is believed only 40 to 60 exist, with the typically encountered specimen apt to grade an abraded Very Fine or so. The early coins of the Carson City Mint, especially those of 1870 through 1872 in all denominations and the smaller denominations for a time after that, circulated heavily. Pop 4; none finer at NGC. Very rare with no mint state examples graded at either service.
Estimated Value $22,000 - 25,000.
