Lot 3920

1860-S $10 Liberty. AU-58. Well struck and quite lustrous with semi reflective surfaces on both sides. Possibly lightly cleaned long ago, now a mellow golden-orange. One miniscule tick on the reverse rim near 12 o'clock. No known mint state examples. A lustrous orange-gold specimen. A fantastic coin in this high grade. The mintage of the 1860-S was just 21,200 pieces. These were all too successfully used in circulation, with the result that today the typical example is apt to be worn, abraded Very Fine. Walter Breen noted that the 1860-S is "Extremely rare EF, unobtainable above," perhaps echoing David Akers' comment, "A very rare coin in any condition and, to the best of my knowledge, unknown in full Mint State." This beauty ranks high within the condition census for finest known.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,500.
