Colombia. 8 Escudos, 1829-UR (Popayan). Fr-68; KM-82.2. Republic of Colombia. Liberty head left. Reverse: Crossed bow and arrows on fasces, flanked by cornuacopiae. PCGS graded AU-55.

The name Popayan, is from an ancient local Indian dialect meaning two straw villages. Today, there are no longer any straw houses in the city. It was conquered by the Spanish conquistador, Sebastian de Belalcazar, in 1537, and became an important transfer point for the wealth being shipped from Catagena to Spain.
