Schmeling, Max & Anny Ondra. Schmeling ((1905-2005) was the heavyweight champion of the world 1930-1932. He is best known for defeating Joe Louis in 1936 and then being defeated by Louis in the 1938 rematch which had international political significance. Anny Ondra (1903-1987) was a Czech actress who married Schmeling in 1932; they were happily married until her death in 1987. Three items signed by Schmeling: a postcard photo signed by Schmeling and Anny Ondra; a 4¾ x 3¼ in. photo signed of Schmeling in boxing trunks; and a 1935 typed letter in German and signed by Schmeling, to John Royal in New York City, thanking him for congratulations on Schmeling's victory over (Steve) Hamas; the letter has a horizontal split at the fold. Also included in a 1937 envelope addressed to a New York State Trooper and with Schmeling's return address., a 1936 stamp, and a couple of photocopied items related to the Olympics.
