Lot 357

1833 N-1 R2 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Lustrous bright original mint red fading to steel brown on the devices with more than a third of the mint color remaining. A beautiful cent with outstanding eye appeal. The only mark is a tiny swipe of darker chocolate brown toning at the dentils under the first 3 in the date. M-LDS. The small lump from a misplaced A between the tops of the T & A in STATES is gone. Comes unattributed in a PCGS slab with an old green label. A new discovery for variety collectors. Our grade is consistent with the slab grade. Finest known of the variety, which is surprisingly difficult to find in top grades. Clearly superior to the example in the Holmes collection (our sale, May 2010) and missing from the Naftzger collection sale (our sale, February 2009). An important cent. Estimated Value $2,000-UP

Discovered by Henry Hettger.
