Lot 3392

Maximianus, AD 286-305 (First Reign). AR Argenteus minted at Ticinum, c. AD 295. Laureate head right of Maximianus. Reverse: The four princes sacrificing over tripod before gate of six-turreted enclosure. RIC Vol. VI, p. 282, 16b [as R2]. Small, 4-mm flan crack at 12 o'clock, visible on both sides. Superb Extremely Fine.

There are a few shared types and inscriptions on ancient coins that can be attributed to two different emperors. The emperor Galerius used a variety of different family names, and to make things even more confusing, he often inscribed his silver coins "Maximianus," just like Maximianus himself, who had three different reigns, some being concurrent with Galerius. To make matters even worse, the many mints producing argentei at the same time used no minrmark under the exergual line. The tetrarchal organization of rulers added sensible accountability and undisputed succession, but made further chronological and geographical identification extremely difficult for modern numismatists, even with all the scholarship at our disposal.
Estimated Value $500 - 600.
