Lot 3115

Great Britain. Crown, 1713. S.3603; ESC-109; Dav-1344; KM-536. Queen Anne, 1702-1714. By John Croker. Third draped bust left, ANNA DEI GRATIA. Reverse; Crowned cruciform shields, roses and plumes in angles. MAG BRI FR ET HIB REG. Edge: ANNO REGNI DVODECIMO in raised letters. This splendid coin is in mint state with a flawless reverse and only a couple of original striations over the obverse portrait, produced (as is often the case with Anne's silver coinage) during the minting process. The steely blue and gold toning is superb and I have never seen a more attractive reverse on a Queen Anne Crown. NGC graded MS-61.

*Anne died on 1st August 1714, a short time after the production of this coin. She had married Prince George of Denmark and the marriage produced 17 children, none of whom survived to claim the throne on the Queen's passing. Anne's coinage is interesting and varied and is notable for the different heraldic designs before and after the important Act of Union with Scotland in 1707. This 1713 Crown is a one year type coin featuring the third bust. All 1713 Crowns are scarce, but exceptionally so in top grades.
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.
