Lot 3102

Cilicia, Tarsos. Mazaios, 361-334 BC. AR Stater (11.14 g). Baal of Tarsos enthroned left, holding eagle, grain ear and bunch of grapes in right hand; in left hand, lotus-tipped scepter. Reverse: Lion attacking bull kneeling left. Dewing 2510; cf. BMC pl. XXX, 12. Natural striking weakness at periphery. Extremely Fine.

The multitudinous variants of this important type include inscription placements and letters presumably indicating magisrates, treasury officials and control numbers. Because there are so many permutations, this fact points to an immense coinage. Does the obverse depiction remind the reader of any other mass issue? Hint - alter the face of Baal and direction it is facing.
Estimated Value $700 - 800.
