Lot 270

1797 S-139 R1 Double Struck PCGS graded VG8. The obverse is slightly nicer than the reverse which shows shallow dark scale on all but the highpoints. Rather glossy steel brown and chocolate with dark steel in protected areas. This piece was dramatically double struck. The first strike was 20% off center to K-4.5 and the second strike was centered on the planchet but rotated 60 degrees clockwise relative to the first impression. LIBERTY from the first strike shows clearly behind the head of the second (centered) strike. Similarly AMERICA from the first strike shows at the bottom of the reverse. An impressive mint error that does not require a glass to appreciate. Our grade is Good-6. The attribution and Carvin Goodridge provenance are shown on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $300-UP.
Ex Carvin Goodridge collection.
