Sale 63

Lot 2463

Pontic Kingdom. Mithradates VI, 120-63 BC. Gold Stater (8.32 g) minted in the type of Lysimachus, c. 88-86 BC at Tomis. Head right of the deified Alexander the Great wearing the horn of Ammon above ear. Reverse: Athena Nikephoros enthroned left; mintmark on throne; beneath, trident. SNG Cop 1091; Müller 273. Some typical die rust. NGC graded.

Struck at the time of the First Mithradatic War, this issue was no doubt a treasury payment that incorporated the older Lysimachian types. There were large numbers of these coins hurriedly minted, which partially accounts for their style and often-seen die rusting.
Estimated Value $650 - 725.

Realized $920
