1847 N-34 R5+ AU50. Sharpness closer to mint state but lightly cleaned, now nicely retoned glossy medium brown and chocolate with bluish steel overtones in protected areas of the reverse and traces of very faded red on both sides. No spots or stains. The only marks are a couple thin, light nicks right of star 7, a small patch of very fine verdigris in the field near the hairbun left of star 10, a shallow planchet cutter impression on the outside edge of the rim at star 13 (as struck), and a very tiny rim nick over the second T in STATES. LDS, die state d, with a fine die crack through the tops of TE in STATES. There is sharp doubling from die bounce at ES-OF-AMERICA, with additional doubling at other places on the reverse. CC#3 for this tough die variety and the next finest grades only VF35+ in the Grellman census. DWH #2279.
