Lot 238
1847 N-31 R5 Repunched Date with Large 7 over Small 7 EF40. Sharpness near AU50 but cleaned and retoned glossy dark steel brown and chocolate, the reverse several shades darker than the obverse. The surfaces are smooth but do show a few light contact marks, including a dull nick on the upper right side of star 7, a couple tiny rim nicks under the 47 in the date, and a dull nick in the dentils over the left side of star 7. MDS, die state c early. Fine die cracks show at MER and TES, but the one through the top of UNITED is extremely faint. The date repunching is clear at the top of the 47, and the so-called "Large 7 over Small 7" feature is obvious. Tied for CC#8 in the Grellman census. Removed from an NCS slab graded Uncirculated details improperly cleaned (NCS label included, and it shows the attribution and Reiver provenance). DWH #2988.
