In honor of Count I.I. Tolstoy’s 30 Years as a Numismatist, 1912. Diakov 1537.1 (R3), JRNS No. 57, Summer 1995, p.53; Sm--. Bespectacled Tolstoy bust l., uncertain signature on truncation / Four-line legend and date, legend around., initials A.? right below. In a contemporary advertisement in Migunov’s catalog, Russian numismatist B.F. Kopylov offers Silver versions of this medal for 5 Roubles and Bronze for 2 Roubles 50 Kopecks. Lightly toned. Uncirculated. Statesman and archaeologist, Count Ivan Ivanovich (1858-1916) was the foremost numismatist and collector of his generation. His works on early Russian and Pre-Petrine coinage were major contributions to Russian numismatics, while his coin collection formed a cornerstone for the field.
