THE STAGE AND ITS STARS PAST AND PRESENT, EDITION DELUXE, ca. 1887, SCARCE. Elephant Folio, Volume II, Sections 1-11, Gebbie & Co, Philadelphia, PA, 1887, brown linen covers, with gilt decoration, ribbon ties, limited edition of 237/400 scores of full size plates, unbound as issued. George Gebbie was a celebrated lithographer originally partnered Frederick Keppel and later George Barrie. But on his own beginning in 1880 became the most important fine-art steel plate photogravure printer and publisher in Philadelphia. With his edition of The Stage and Its Stars, Gebbie first printed an oversized (elephant folio 18 x 14") representing two volumes each comprised of numerous sections boasting the most extraordinary photoravure portraits and character illustrations imaginable with detail and clarity superb, several of them tinted. The majority of the text selections and analysis involve Shakespeare but also many of the great dramatists of the past. Within each analysis, profiles and portraits of many of the legendary players of the 18th and 19th Century including Edwin Booth, Sarah Bernhardt, Ellen Terry, John Henderson and many more. Section 2 and 3 have some edge staining in the texts and engravings but the other 9 Sections qiuite clean. The folios exhibit wear from the years of enjoyment but overall in good condition given 130 years in age. For anyone a fan of 19th Century theater, the great dramatists, and exceptional fine art printing, these 11 volumes are a must. Estimated Value $800-UP
