Byzantine Empire. Manuel I, 1143-1180. Gold Hyperpyron Nomisma (4.18g), Thessalonica. Similar to lot 2340
but the emperor's globus is surmounted by plain cross instead of patriarchal (five jewels on collar). DOC 1f; Hendy pl. 12, 12; Sear 1971. Extremely Fine and extremely rare.

Hendy (DOC 4.1, p. 281) notes that the Gornoslav hoard contained only two specimens of this type out of the 264 hyperpyra of Manuel.
