1938 New Rochelle Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-67 Prooflike. Blazing white coin. Pop 14; 1 higher in MS68 Star PL (PCGS # 9335) .

New Rochelle, New York was settled in 1688 by French Huguenots from La Rochelle, France. The obverse displays a protesting calf being delivered in payment of "one fatt calfe on every fouer and twentyth day of June Yearly and Every Year forever" according to the conditions laid down in the land sale to the Huguenots. The reverse has as its central theme an idealized fleur-de-lis which has been the symbol of France ever since 1180 AD Gertrude K. Lathrop designed the coin. Issue price was $2 each with a net mintage of 15,251 plus 50 presentation specimens struck from a single blow on a proof planchet using polished dies.
