Lot 2152

German States - Hesse-Cassel. 3 Talers, 1635-LH. Dav & Sond-317; Schütz-851; Hoffmeister-1012. 85.9 grams. Mintmaster LH (Lubert Haussmann, 1635-1638). Wilhelm V, 1627-1637. Crowned lion left with LxH below. Outer legend: Star WILHELM'. D : G : LANDGRAVI'. HASSIAE. COM : C : D : Z : ET. N : ANNO : MDCXXV *, inner row legend: FATA CONSILIIS POTIORA * Reverse Tree in storm, sun above with Hebrew "JEHOVAH", with city of six houses. A few minor natural flan flaws. Toned. Of the highest rarity. NGC graded EF-40.

This is one of the most important coins of the sale. Talers show up regularly, double Talers infrequently, and triple Talers essentially never. Such a coin was never intended for circulation, and was almost surely some type of presentation piece, either for Wilhelm, or given by him to one of his leading vassals.
Estimated Value $35,000 - 40,000.
David Cassel Collection.
