Lot 215

1847 N-23 R5 MS60+. Attractive glossy chocolate and steel brown with underlying frosty mint luster covering the fields. Virtually flawless. The best identifying marks are two thin, very faint vertical nicks above star 1, a tiny planchet flake right of star 11 (as struck), and a hint of reddish brown toning on the leaf under ME in AMERICA. These marks are barely visible and the eye appeal is excellent. Nicely struck MDS, die state c late. The die cracks around the reverse legend are clear and the section of dentils between the cracks over AM is just starting to shift inward. Tied for CC#3 in the Grellman census. A beautiful example of this very tough die variety. DWH #2205.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
Ex Hughes Sale, lot 322-Willard C. Blaisdell 9/76 (via Del Bland)-R. E. Naftzger, Jr. (via Bill Noyes) 1/10/03.
