Lot 214

1847 N-22 R3+. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Mint red mellowing to light steel brown, half the red remaining, mostly on the obverse. Sharply struck and very attractive. The best identifying marks are a very light vertical nick left of star 11, a small spot of darker toning in the field right of the inner curl, and another darker brown toning spot on the neck at the tip of the curl. Otherwise this cent is virtually flawless and the eye appeal is outstanding. MDS, die state d early. There is a fine die crack through MER to the dentils above the adjacent I (but not above the first A) and the crack from the dentils under star 1 fades out just before reaching the neck and bust. Our grade is MS64. Tied for CC#2 honors in the Grellman census. Comes with an impressive provenance. PCGS population 1; none finer in Red & Brown at PCGS for the variety. DWH #2204 (PCGS # 37320) .
Estimated Value $600-UP.
