Lot 2020

1896, $5 Silver Certificate. PMG graded Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. . Fr-268. . KL-238. A lovely Gem example of this ever-popular design, with extraordinarily broad margins and excellent colors. PMG has assigned this note their "Exceptional Paper Quality" modifier, indicating that their opinion is that the paper surfaces are completely original. This short-lived design type is among the most treasured type notes in all of currency collecting, as the allegorical figures presenting Electricity as a dominant force in the world give as artistic a display as has ever been conceived for a circulating medium of exchange. Because of the partially-clad female figures on the face design, this note did not meet with contemporary public approval in that more purient Victorian era (especially evident in Boston, where the Comstock ring held power--leading to the phrase "banned in Boston"). The design was discontinued after only three years of production, and surviving examples in top grade are highly valued today by collectors.
Estimated Value $18,000 - 24,000.
