Lot 16

1794 C-5a R4+. VF-25. Small Edge Letters. Frosty steel and chocolate brown. Probably lightly cleaned long ago but the toning appears natural and the eye appeal is excellent. The planchet and surfaces appear flawless, but a strong glass reveals extremely faint roughness covering the fields and protected areas on the obverse. No verdigris. The only marks are a tiny pinprick under the L in LIBERTY and barely visible rim bruises at IT in UNITED and TA in STATES. These marks are trivial and not at all distracting. Sharply struck EDS, Manley state 1.0, without any die clashmarks. The reverse is rotated 15 degrees CCW. This cataloger has seen many examples with the reverse rotated in a CW direction, but this is the first seen with a CCW rotation. The obverse is well centered on the planchet but the reverse is off slightly to K-5. Weight 107.0 grains.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.
Ex Stack's 1/2003:1087 (via Russ Butcher).
