Lot 1298

1936 Buffalo Nickel. Type 1. NGC graded Proof 67. Lovely, rose and steel-silver toning. 1936 saw the resumption of Proof coinage in America after a hiatus of 20 years. The earliest 1936 Proof Nickels (Type I) received a Satin Finish, somewhat akin to the earlier Matte Proofs of 1913-1916. Unfortunately, the new finish didn't appear all that different from the finish on high-end Mint State coins, so the public stayed away. By the time the Mint changed to the new Brilliant finish, it was late in the year and sales suffered again. Thus, the mintage of 1936 Satin and Brilliant Proof Nickels totals only 4,420 pieces combined. NGC reports 101 examples in this grade, with only 8 finer (all PR-68).
Estimated Value $2,400 - 2,600.

Realized $2,588
