Lot 129

1846 N-4 R1 Repunched Date AU55. Mint state sharpness but lightly cleaned, now retoned glossy dark steel brown and chocolate with frosty artificial red in protected areas, mostly on the reverse. Looks like a choice red & brown mint state cent. The only marks are a short, faint hairline under star 4 and a light nick in the field right of the main curl. Rare LDS, die state d, with a clearly defined rim cud break under 184. The cud is strong on this example. The repunching remains obvious on all 4 digits. Not in the overall condition census but third finest of those known with the cud. This is the Grellman plate coin for the die state in his 2001 edition of the book on the series. DWH #2194.
Estimated Value $300-UP.
Ex Denis Loring 8/92-R. S. Brown, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 6/2/2002:258-Martin Paul-Chris McCawley 11/11/02.
