Lot 12

1794 C-3a R5. VF-20. Small Edge Letters. Clipped Planchet. Very attractive glossy chocolate brown with delicate bluish steel overtones in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and show only a few trivial contact marks, including a tiny chip on the bust tip, a rim nick over the first T in STATES, and a minor rim bruise at IT in UNITED. Sharply struck LDS, Manley 2.0, with a bulge in the field right of the date. A very rare die state according to Manley, and this is the Manley plate coin for the die state. In addition, there is a rather large planchet clip (as struck) affecting the dentils on the right side of the obverse and the opposing area over MERI. A very attractive half cent and a neat mint error. Removed from a PCGS slab graded XF40 (the PCGS label is included, and it mentions the clipped planchet error). Weight 105.7 grains.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 7,000.
Ex Dr. Wallace Lee, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 5/25/03:77.
