German States. Saxony. Friedrich August II (1733-1763), Duke, Elector and King of Poland as Augustus III. Silver Vicaria. German States. Saxony. Friedrich August II (1733-1763), Duke, Elector and King of Poland as Augustus III. Silver Vicariat Thaler, 1741. Friedrich as Elector on horseback. Rev. Vacant Imperial throne (Dav 2669; KM 907). In NGC holder graded MS64 (only eight graded by NGC, of which four are circulated and four mint state, two in 61, one 63 and this specimen, MS64), superb, gem brilliant uncirculated, well struck with full original frosty mint lustre. Very rare in such nice condition, the finest graded by NGC and quite likely the finest known. Upon the death of HRE Charles VI in 1740, his daughter Maria Theresa came to the throne but without universal support, leading to the War of the Austrian Succession. Friedrich, desirous of certain Habsburg lands for Saxony, at first opposed Maria Theresa, then changed sides in 1742. During the short interim, this vicariat Thaler was struck - one of the most handsome designs of 18th Century German and Polish coinage. ex FDC Collection.
Estimated Value $3,500-UP.
