Lot 1090

1796 S-98 R4. Fine-15. Draped Bust. Sharpness VF35 with choice surfaces and exceptional eye appeal except for a large X lightly pinscratched across the obverse. The only other defects are a small rim nick under the lowest curl and a couple more opposite the nose. Certainly a solid condition census example if not for the two scratches. Glossy medium brown and chocolate with frosty lighter brown covering the protected areas. E-MDS, Breen state II. Listed as VF30 net VF20 in the Breen/Bland condition census. Comes with an impressive provenance.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.
Ex Dr. Thomas Hall 9/7/1909-Virgil Brand-New Netherlands Coin Co. (privately) 9/26/51-C. Douglas Smith 1970-R. S. Brown, Jr.-Ray Chatham-Thomas Wolf.
