1845 N-5 R1 MS63. Mint red fading to light steel brown, about half the original color remaining. There is a long, very light nick down the cheek under the right edge of the eye and a few more tiny ticks on the face and field to the left. A small spot of darker toning inside the top of the 4 is the only other notable mark. LDS, die state b, with a fine die crack through star 2. This cent is plated inside the front cover (left side) of the second (1987) edition of the Grellman book on the cents of 1840-57 (see the story at the second 1845 N-4). Tied for CC#5 in the Grellman census. DWH #1838.
