Lot 96

1802/0 C-1 R6 Overdate 2 over 0, Reverse of 1800 Fair-2. Struck over a Spoiled Large Cent. The obverse is slightly better but the reverse is weaker. Somewhat glossy chocolate and olive brown, the devices a couple shades lighter than the protected areas. The date and LIBERTY are weak but readable. There is a small spot of greenish verdigris on the jaw and several more on the reverse. The reverse is also covered with myriad hairline scratches, all blended into the natural patina. There is not much of the reverse design remaining, but the bottom of the wreath can be made out with a bit of effort, and the ribbon surrounding the fraction is relatively narrow, which is diagnostic when compared to the reverse used for the more common 1802/0 C-2 variety. In addition, there is bold undertype from a badly off-center large cent, including a half dozen dentils and a complete "S" from STATES where AMER would have been on the half cent reverse. Not pretty, but nearly all of the known examples of this rarity are low grade with significant problems. Weight 72.4 grains.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
