Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 4

Lot 930

Rare Key Date 1815 Half Dollar. EF-40. Cleaned and retoned with a hint of pink on the reverse, more natural silvery-gray on the obverse. Struck from clashed dies, as were most of this variety. The key date this series, mintages plummeted due to the mint fire which took place on January 10, 1816, just hours after this half dollar was delivered, hence no half dollars, and little else, was coined in 1816 while the mint tried to repair the damage to its rolling mills. Demand during 1815 was light due to the minor conflict we had with England from 1812 forward.

Realized $2,415
