Lot 903

1857 N-4 R1 Small Date. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Frosty bright mint red fading to steel brown on the highpoints with about two-thirds of the original red remaining. Just a few trivial marks including a small spot of darker toning in the center of the cheek, a dull rim nick at star 6, and a small planchet flake on the jawline above the throat. M-LDS, die state c. The small point down from the bottom of the inner hair bun is gone. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#2 in the Grellman census. Clearly one of the finest 1857 Small Date business strikes known. The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. (PCGS # 403970) .
Estimated Value $1,250-UP.
Ex Herman Halpern, Stack's 3/16/1988:772 (lot ticket included)-Dr Philip W. Ralls.
