Lot 762

1851/81 N-3 R1 51 over 81. NGC graded MS-65 Brown. Lustrous light chocolate and medium brown with darker bluish steel overtones. Generous traces of faded mint red remain in protected areas, mostly on the reverse. The only marks are a tiny speck of carbon hidden in the dentil roots left of star 3 and a few tiny ticks on the chin. MDS, die state b. The fields are slightly reflective on both sides thanks to a fresh die lapping that removed the die lines that covered the fields in the early state. Microscopic die polishing lines are visible in the fields on both sides indicating this piece was struck shortly after the dies were placed back into service following the lapping. However, the 51 over 81 feature remains clear, including a remnant of the inverted 5 inside the bottom of the 8. A great die state for this popular variety. Our grade is MS63. The attribution and 1851/81 feature are noted on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
