Erté (Russia, France, 1892-1990). Loge de Theatre. A finely designed and decorative serigraph of two ladies of fashion within a theater box. Said to be an edition 300; numbered CXXXIX / CL. Signed at lower right. Image size: 21-1/2" x 17-1/4". In handsome deco-style frame, black lacquered with moiré satin mat; frame size: 39-1/2" x 33". Year of production 1983.

Erte was born to a wealthy Family in St. Petersburg, Russia. From an early age, Erté made it clear he did not wish to follow his father, who was a Navy Admiral, into the military. The young Erté showed an extraordinary talent and aptitude for design. By the age of 18, he moved to Paris in 1912. There he immediately found work as a fashion illustrator, and eventually learned couture from the talented Poiret.
His work caught the attention of Harper's Bazaar, where his flamboyant fashion designs perfectly captured the emerging design aesthetic of the Art Deco period. Erté's designs and visions soon dominated American and international fashion in the 1920's and 1930's, not to mention carryover work in movies, stage, musical productions and more. After WWII his popularity waned considerably, but underwent a rebirth in the 1960's, following a Paris exhibition of his work. By renewed demand he created a numerous series of limited edition lithographs, sculpture, etc. in the styles for which he had achieved his original fame.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,500.
