Lot 736

1853 N-23 R4. MS-62. Stray 4 in Hair Right of Ear. Lustrous light olive and bluish steel with 10-15% of the original mint red remaining on both sides. Excellent eye appeal, just a few tiny specks of dark toning away from choice. The only notable spot is located on the peak of the 1. LDS, die state b. The fields are covered with strong radial die flowlines, strongest on the obverse, and they create attractive cartwheel luster that adds to the eye appeal. The stray 4 in the hair just right of the ear is visible but not strong. Much of the neck is covered with a very shallow low spot, as usual on this die variety. A nice example of this popular variety, CC#5 in the Grellman census.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
Ex Chris McCawley 5/13/88-Bob Lomprey, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 9/21/98:1795 (via Don Valenziano)-Phyllis Thompson.
