Lot 7

1840 N-6 R1 Large Date MS63. Frosty bluish steel brown with half the original mint red remaining on the obverse, nearly a third on the reverse. There are traces of light carbon at ERT in LIBERTY and two small carbon spots at the I in AMERICA. Otherwise this cent is close to gem and the considerable amount of original mint color is a big plus. MDS, die state b. The repunching on the 40 is still clear but the arc line at the dentil tips over RIC is gone. CC#7 in the Grellman census. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS64RB (NGC label included). DWH #2215.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/24/2003:282.
