1857 N-3 R5- Small Date Proof-Only. PCGS graded Proof 63 Brown. Bluish steel brown with faded mint red covering about a third of the surfaces. The fields display moderately deep mirrors under a very delicately mottled mix of the bluish steel and faded red tones. Defects include a very faint struck-through lint line in the field under star 3, a speck of carbon at the dentils right of star 12, and a tiny one on the bust above the 1. Called Proof-63 by Del Bland and Denis Loring and tied for CC#3 honors in the Loring list. Our grade is Proof-63, tied for CC#3 in the Grellman census.
