Lot 618

1848 N-44 R5+ VG10. Sharper by at least 5 points but the planchet is covered with microscopic granularity under a rather glossy dark olive brown and chocolate patina. The highpoints are a lighter shade of steel brown. No notable signs of verdigris and only a couple trivial marks, including a barely visible scuff along the jawline and a tiny rim bruise under the end of the wreath stem. Extremely rare LDS, die state c, with a strong die crack through the tops of ME to the rim at either end. This is the finest of only 3 examples known with the die crack. An important piece for the serious collector of die states.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

Realized $414
