Lot 549

1798 S-170 R3 Style II Hair, Small 8. PCGS graded AU-50. CAC Approved. Glossy chocolate and steel brown. Smooth and attractive. The notable contact marks are a pair of short, fine scratches off the ends of the hair ribbon and a collection of tiny nicks around OF. E-MDS, Breen state II. There are clear die clashmarks on the obverse but the arc crack has not formed behind the portrait. Struck slightly off center to K-4 with the dies out of proper axial alignment (the die faces were not parallel) causing weakness along the right edge of the obverse and the corresponding area at ES-OF-AM while everything else is properly struck. This misalignment is mentioned by Breen in his "Remarks" on page 498 of his encyclopedia. Called EF40 by Bland. Our grade is VF35. The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. Pop 1; 1 finer in 53. (PCGS # 36080) .
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
Ex Jim McGuigan, 1991 EAC Sale, 4/27/1991:85-Dr. Philip W. Ralls.
