Lot 505

1864 Two Cents. Small motto. NGC graded MS-65 Red and Brown. For the date, this is about as nice as this variety is found, with just a handful graded a point higher by NGC. Nearly full red, with slight mellowing in near the centers to account for the Red and Brown designation. The Small Motto variety has always been collected widely, and over the years it has been proven to be far more scarce than the Large Motto style. Apparently, the Small Motto style was first used during the pattern stage, and soon after regular production began, the Large Motto style won out and most of the 1864s made show that design.
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,400.

Realized $1,323
