Lot 433

Jockey Scale. Antique Jockey Scale -- Circa 1850. English, constructed of English Oak. Used in the mid-1880's through early1900's to weigh-in and weigh-out jockeys before and after race events at Ascot, and other English race tracks.
Authenticated by the National Horse Racing Museum, which has one on display, this beautiful, eye-catching piece valued between 10,000 and 12,000 lbs sterling. We believe (but cannot guarantee) this to be the only one of its kind in the United States. Purchased in England in 1959, and brought to the U.S. by a private owner. Displayed at Churchill Downs for a brief period during the Kentucky Derby, then sequestered in storage until 1993, when we acquired it. Includes Jockey chair on a concealed scale, with balance itself enclosed in an oak box on the side. Approx. 35" high by 31" wide, on two oak legs and two rubber wheels. Choice condition.
Estimated Value $2,500-UP.
