Lot 4118

Great Britain. Pattern Halfcrown, 1820. ESC-Unlisted. George IV, 1820-1830. First bust. Obverse: Laureate head of King left. Reverse: Crowned garnished shield with ANNO 1820. this is an excessively rare pattern, possibly unique. Not listed in 'English Silver Coinage'. It has obverse letters which are solid and differently spaced, unlike the letters on other 1820 Halfcrowns which are characterized by a cross hatched interior. The King's tie-ribbons are quite different, the rear tie ribbon resembles a dog leg and points to letter X. Normally it would be straighter and point between letters E and X. The designer's initials (B.P) are located further from the corner of the truncation. NGC graded MS-64.

*Ex Spink's Colin Adams sale, December 2005, lot 610. Ex HM Lingford collection. This important coin may have been the test piece for the first Halfcrown of the reign. It has a raised 'locating' dot on the king's ear at the center of the obverse. Quite probably the die was discarded and it is doubtful that any other specimens exist. Beautifully toned, and mirrorlike.
Estimated Value $2,500-UP.

Realized $4,255
