Lot 410

Antique Ivory Chess Set From China. Exquisite Ivory Chess Set, possibly made at the turn-of-the-century, though more likely an artful replica, with intricately hand-carved ivory pieces, 4" to 8" high, ornamented with highly detailed scrimshaw. This set may have been ment for display in the "curiosity cabinets" fashionable in the 18th and 19th centuries, and as such would be highly collectible. The set is notable for its unarmed figures; these chessmen are less warlike than most Chinese sets, which typically depict conflict between Chinese and Mongols or Caucasians. The set is also remarkable for the diversity of its pawns, each of which represents an independent character. Half the pieces in this Ivory set are a natural White; the other half are stained an earthen brown. The figures are ensconced in a padded, satin-lined wood case, which folds out to form a playing board. A stunning set. Some scratches on wood case, otherwise fine. Ivory pieces in Mint Condition.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
