Gemini Program, 1968, NASA Memo with Alan Shepard Comments, This original 1968 "Review of Gemini Transcripts" Memo from Paul Haney at the Public Affairs Office to Chief, Astronaut Office has to do with reviewing the Gemini on-board transcripts prior to public release. Haney strongly recommends against this review. Shepard strongly disagrees writing: "Paul, Sorry, Cannot oblige without other direction - still don't agree with your concept". Haney ends his letter: "If nothing else, I am a firm believer in telling it like it is…I contend that the slightest editing, consoring, massaging otherwise whatever of the released transcript will not help generations yet unborn to understand what went on when Gus Grissom and John Young orbited the Earth three times on March 23, 1965. Our literature today is certainly spicey enough to accept an occassional god-damn or worse. The public doesn't think of our space pilots as a bunch of alter boys. Certainly the pilots themselves shouldn't entertain any such grandiose self-appraisal…". This memo and Shepard's comments definitely call it like it was. A historic internal document.
