Lot 3671

1839-C $2.50 Classic Head. NGC graded MS-61. Untoned and well struck. Light marks on both sides. Popular classic head. Extensive die cracks are seen on each side, indicating this is probably a late state for this die. The surfaces are bright and satiny with just a hint of greenish gold frost around and within the devices; an extensive die crack involves Liberty's cheek (as made). There is a small nick below the chin and a few light contact marks in the fields and on the devices. The C mintmark on this year appears above the date. This is the second year of Charlotte Mint coinage operations, and the last of two years with this mintmark placement; the mintmark position was switched to the reverse below the denomination in 1840 when Gobrecht's coronet Liberty was introduced. Only 18,140 struck. Pop 8; 2 in 62; 1 in 63.
Estimated Value $24,000 - 27,000.
