Russia. Novodel Ruble, 1797-SM FTs. Bitkin-H18; Sev-Unlisted; GM-Unlisted; Uzd-Unlisted. 38 mm. 20.82 grams. Edge #1. Paul I. This is a novodel of the "heavy ruble" date 1797, but struck to the 1798-1801 standard of weight and diameter. The only other recorded light weight 1797 ruble novodel is the variety of GM-99 which has the initials SM MB and is extremely rare. This specimen with initials SM FTs (correct for the original issue heavy ruble) is unrecorded in any reference that we can find. Deeply toned. Of the Highest Rarity if not unique. PCGS graded MS-63.
