Lot 3296

Great Britain. Pattern Proof Shilling, 1825. ESC-1264 (R-5, extremely rare, just 5 to 10 pieces known). George IV, 1820-1830. Bare head. Reverse: Small lion. Reeded edge. Seldom seen prototype for the Bare Head coinage, distinguished by a smaller crowned lion on the reverse. When the currency issues began in 1825 (and the Proof in 1826), the lion was remodeled and appears considerably larger on all other shillings of this style. This splendid coin is possibly the finest of the few known examples. Superb Proof, with marvelous violet-gold iridescence on the obverse, while the reverse displays exquisite golden blue and silvery green iridescence. A stunning classic of the Georgian Age! PCGS graded Proof 66.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.
(Terner Registry).

Realized $5,290
