Kyrenaica, Kyrene, c. 322-308 BC. Gold Stater (8.59 g) minted c. 322-312 BC. Quadriga driven right by Nike; in upper right field, star with rays (sun). Reverse: Zeus Lykaios enthroned left holding eagle; before, thymiaterion. NGC graded Fine; Strike 5/5; Surface 2/5; Polished. We would describe this rare coin type as having been sweated from a mount; otherwise, VF or better details. BMC 116; Naville 83; SNG Cop 1209 (possibly same dies).

This gold issue was payment to the Macedonian forces to protect the semi-autonomous nature of Kyrene, center for the valuable silphium trade.
