Lot 3161

Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Ptolemy I, 323-285 BC. Gold Pentadrachm (17.82 g) minted at Alexandria. Diademed bust right of Ptolemy I; behind ear, delta. Reverse: Eagle standing left on thunderbolt; in left field, monogram. Svoronos 210; Dewing 2740; SNG Cop --. Very rare. Lustrous with a little die rusting on reverse, helping to recognize the various die states. Extremely Fine.

The recent hoard of Ptolemy III and IV gold coins has brought greater attention to this impressive series. This present denomination, struck under Ptolemy I, portrays one of Alexander's founding generals. The Greek letter delta is believed to be an artist's initial and is commonly seen on the silver tetradrachms of this period.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.

Realized $14,375
