1878, $20 United States Note. PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ. . Fr-129. . KL-528. A candidate for finest known. Possibly from a long ago bundle of 100 notes, this A101xxxxx note is similar to several other high-end gems that turn up once ever two years or so on the market. With the changeover to the 1875 series, the colorful array on the front gives way begrudgingly to a pair of large double-X Roman numerals on either side of a large 20 in the center. The overprint is in red and the Allison-New signatures unique to this 1875 series with small red seal having rays. An incredible array of rich sahdes of color enhance the crisp fresh surface of this lovely gem $20 legal tender note. The devices are bright, the margins complete and balanced, and evenly cut from the original sheets. In a word, the note is outstanding!
All notes of this issue were printed under authority of the Congressional Act of March 3, 1863. The notes issued were from 1 to 10,000 Dollars and include the series of 1869, 1874, 1878, 1880, 1907, 1917 and 1923. The notes of 1869 are titled "Treasury Notes;" all later issues are titled "United States Notes." However, the obligation on all series is the same. "The United States will pay to bearer dollars#. This note is a legal tender at its face value for all debts public and private, except duties on imports and interest on the public debt."
