FR-126b. 1863, $20 United States Note. PMG Gem New 66. . Fr-126b. A gorgeous early "Legal Tender" of the greenback period, this important series started it all when the government of the North, in an effort to pay for the quickly escalating costs of the Civil War, resorted to a series of unbacked paper notes. The paper of this note is truly fresh and the solid gem quliaty appears in the white paper, the bright green and red color overprint with black contrast in the front design. There are two serial numbers; AMERICAN BANK NOTE CO. NEW YORK in the lower border.
