Kingdom of Macedon. Alexander III, the Great, 336-323 BC. AR Drachm (4.30 g) minted posthumously at Sardes, c. 323-319 BC. Head right of Herakles, wearing lion's skin headdress. Reverse: Zeus enthroned left, holding eagle and scepter; monogram in left field; torch under throne. Thompson 191-199; Price 2600. Lustrous and well struck. Superb Extremely Fine.

Alexander's drachms minted at Sardes and Miletos are presented in depth in Margaret Thompson's corpus. Published in 1983 by the ANS, it is number 16 in the series Numismatic Studies. This coin has a special quality about it.
